Please join me in wishing the very best to our Valley students competing in the 22nd annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge this week in Orlando.

MVSU students selected to the team following rigorous campus competitions are Cedric Crump, team captain, a senior biology major and David K. Fletcher, a senior political science major, both of Jackson; Joalane Paulinah Mabeco, a junior mathematics major; and Caleb Ray Johnson III, a junior accounting major of Natchez.

The two-day competition will test students’ knowledge of history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social science, and popular culture while giving them the opportunity to win much needed grant money for their schools. In all, more than $300,000 in institutional grants will be awarded.

You may recall last year’s team was in the finals but just fell short to Prairie View. The Valley team is coached by Dr. Louis Hall and Ms. Barbara J.P. Washington.

Also, please join me in congratulating Katrina Leflore, a current MVSU teacher intern, who awarded a $500 scholarship from the Mississippi Professional Educators at the MPE Convention on April 9 in Jackson, Mississippi. Also attending the conference was Dr. Jo Anne Heisterkamp, director of Field Experiences.

I am happy to report that this year’s captain of our Mock Trial Team, Michelle Scott, won an Outstanding Trial Advocacy Award for her performance at the National Diversity Mock Trial Competition at the John Marshall Law School. I am sure you will join me in congratulating her hard work in pursuit of excellence.
